Study on subjective safety in cycling — results and data set of a survey of over 21,000 participants.
So far, there are hardly any surveys which types of roads, cycling facilities and intersections the traffic participants perceive subjectively as safe. In particular, for the differentiated consideration of linked features, such as the guide form of the wheel traffic system (RVA), execution, width and the situation left and right of the RVA, there have been hardly any investigations so far. Are cycling strips with locking posts (pollers) the best solution to alleviate the perceived conflict between car and bicycle, or are sufficiently wide cycle strips crucial? What effect does the coloring of wheel strips have? Under what conditions is the guidance in the side compartment or on the roadway perceived as safer?
To reduce this research gap, fixmycity has developed the “Street Check” survey and carried out it together with Tagesspiegel Berlin. On the basis of 3D images, 1,900 different road situations were evaluated by over 21,000 participants. The underlying systematics for the classification of road cross-sections and their characteristic characteristics now allow the analysis of the influencing variables of individual features, such as RVA width, surface, structural separation, right-side parking, etc. It was also possible to gain insights into differences in the safety perception of different user groups and the perspective of car drivers and Fußgänger:innen.
