The BAW (Bundesanstalt für Wasserbau) conducts extensive R & D studies (research and development) on behalf of the WSV (Waterway and Shipping Administration of the Federal Government) for climate impact research as well as on the impact of planned expansion measures on maritime shipping routes. For this purpose, high-resolution three-dimensional numerical simulation models are used. The ability and quality of the simulation results depend decisively on the quality of the control at the edges of the model. The model topography (= “calculation grid”) and the hydrological conditions used on the model margins should represent as far as possible an identical period of time. Since the model topographies for the model areas of the “Jade-Weser” and the “Elbe” model of the BAW were rebuilt in 2012, a measuring program for the measurement of hydrological boundary conditions was carried out in summer 2012. For this purpose, BAW Hamburg has set up a measuring network of a total of 13 observation stations along the control changes of the numerical model systems. At least over the period of a “nipp-jumping cycle” (~ 14 days), the following parameters were measured in different device configurations:
CTD measurements (Conductivity, Temperature, Depth):
— Water level deflection (side curve)
— Salinity
— Temperature
— Turbidity (partially)
For model validation purposes, a margin moved in parallel to the model area on an approximately 10 km
ADCP (Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler):
— Flow and
— Seagoing measurements (partially)
have been carried out.
Where available, data from the level stations operated by the WSV have been included. Data from the DWD are available for meterological information (Source: German weather service).
