On the site of the settlement Balhorn near Paderborn, abandoned during the late Middle Ages, the archaeologists also encountered about 24,000 animal bones during their excavations. At the request of the archaeologists, DG NRW carried out an osteoarchaeological analysis of domestic and wildlife socialisation from the Roman Empire to the late Middle Ages. From the taxonomic-numeric bone analysis, the use of pets during the named period is clarified. This shows the economic importance of the various breeds of pets and the economic strategies of their owners (battles, food, breeding).
