Dataset description

An overview of the application possibilities of computed tomography in paleontology is given. The examples range from simple imaging (surface, volume representations) to multiplanar virtual cuts, collection of 2D and 3D data (quantification of volume), finite element analysis, buoyancy calculations, 3D printing, taphonomic studies and the reconstruction of sensory performances from dead organisms. Advantages and disadvantages of the method are discussed and reference is made to numerous further sources.
