A project of the German Life Rescue Society Landesverband Hamburg e.V. in cooperation with the Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) and the Hamburg Fire Department to increase water safety at the Elbe and other waters of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg.
As an extension of a preliminary project “Elbrettungspunkt” individually marked information signs for the citizens are placed in selected locations. In workshops together with the HPA and fire brigade, additional areas at the Norder-, Süder- and Dove-Elbe were included in the project.
Due to the peculiarity of the international port, it was decided, together with the HPA, not only to identify bathing spots, but also to identify from a nautical point of view distinctive points such as public investors of ferry traffic and public berths. The reason for this is that international ship crews do not
Know street names, but rely on additional information when placing an emergency call. Another special feature in international shipping is that an emergency call is usually placed via VHF maritime radio and not by phone/mobile phone. This emergency call then arrives at the nautical headquarters of the HPA, which then alerts the fire department via telephone.
At the request of the responsible offices, all other relevant water areas in Hamburg can be reviewed promptly by the project participants and a proposal for labelling can be drawn up.
