The Charter on the capacity to use soils for agricultural and forestry purposes is a database assessing the ability of soils to produce normal crops and forest species for long periods of time, without soil degradation occurring. The classification system includes eight classes of use capacity defined according to the type and intensity of the limiting soil both the choice of crops and the productivity of the crops. Class assignment shall be made on the basis of the most limiting factor; in the next phase the soils are attributed to subclasses and units of use capacity. This mechanism allows the identification of soils that, although with different characteristics at taxonomic level, are similar as potential for agricultural and forestry use and present similar problems of management and conservation of the resource.
