Dataset description
The locality database and geographical names consists of over 140,000 place names related to the regions of Piedmont, Liguria, Valle d’Aosta, Region PACA, Region Rhone Alpes. (euro cross-border region Alps — Mediterranean).The database was created with the aim of creating a regional and cross-border reference dataset on place names or geographical location names, in support of research and geolocation activities, of unambiguous referencing of measures or activities of survey in the field and more generally as a primary tool for knowledge and description of the territory in its physical, historical and cultural form. The dataset was carried out by Arpa Piemonte through a structured process of collecting, selecting, comparing, verifying and classifying numerous regional, national and international databases followed by a process (still underway) of integration and precise correction of data both in terms of geographical classification and classification. The first level includes the following categories: orography, hydrography, inhabited locations, geographical areas, services. Each geographical name in the database shall then include: extended name, geographical coordinates, original name (name or abbreviated abbreviated abbreviated name given in the original maps or sources), information font, category, class, administrative area of belonging (state, region, province, municipality), quota (calculated or attributed by official sources), prominence and ranking (indices of relevance/importance of the place name within its class/category, used by the search services (gazetteer service) and for cartographic representation purposes).From the geographical dataset, the map services (REST, WMS) and geographic search services (Gazetteer service) used by different thematic applications of the Geoportal Arpa have been exposed.
