The computerised Census Sections (SCs) have been, since 1991, the instrument that responds to the need of municipalities to prepare their own topographical plans for carrying out the general censuses. The census section represents the basic territorial unit of the Municipality, from which the territorial and administrative units of higher level (localities, sub-municipal areas, constituencies plus possibly others) can be reconstructed by sum. The following are the main features of the census sections: each census section consists of a single body bounded by a closed broken line, usually formed by the lines running along the centerline of the linear geographical entities identifying its perimeter; each census section must be fully contained within one and only one location; census sections must cover the entire municipal territory; the design of the sections must comply with the sub-municipal subdivisions, where present; each census section has been encoded with a unique numeric code within each municipality.
