Cholecystectomy: proportion of patients with simple calculus without complications

Cholelithiasis is a widespread condition characterised by the presence of stones in the gallbladder and/or biliary tract; it affects women most, with a female/male ratio of 2 to 1. Acute cholecystitis is an acute inflammation of the gallbladder wall, accompanied by cholelithiasis in 95 % of cases; the chronic form is often characterised by recurrent colic and a contracted, fibrotic, thickened gallbladder. Cholelithiasis with or without cholecystitis is an important cause of abdominal surgery. The surgery can be carried out in laparoscopy or open air (laparotomy).
