The project to define the Italian coastal structure was born with the first digitisation and characterisation of the coastal elements (shore line, back beach, beaches), which took place in 2005 and aimed at the study of the state of the Italian coasts and their evolution. The characterisation of the coast line was carried out by photointerpretation and digitisation on video from the data base made up of color orthophotos IT2000, realised in 1998/1999. This first activity produced the most recent and uniform representation on a national scale 1:25,000 of the morphological structure of the Italian coast and allowed the localisation and classification of defense works implemented in recent decades for the protection of coasts from erosive phenomena and natural hazards. The coast line derived from orthophotos was subsequently superimposed and compared with the coastline line extracted from the historical reference IGM cartography at scale 1:25,000. This second activity allowed, through appropriate elaborations, the analysis extended to a period of about 40-50 years of the variations in the shoreline and the identification and classification of the territorial areas in progress and backwards. Coverage 2000 was first updated in 2010 on orthophotos of the IT2006 flight, referring to the period 2004-06, using the same standard used for the LC2000. The update of the LC20V1.0, with the digitisation and characterisation of the coastline, the beach line and the beaches that emerged, was carried out starting from the images published by Google Maps, referable almost entirely to the years 2017-2020. A new standard has been established to maintain comparability with previous versions while refining some themes. Version 1.0 of the line is not complete with spatial analysis as a co-registration analysis requires further calculations to eliminate errors found in different regions.
