Il prodotto Corine Land Cover sull'Italia al quarto livello tematico è stato creato sulla base della classificazione definita dal Ministero dell''Ambiente. Il Ministero realizzò nel 2000 una copertura al quarto livello tematico per le aree naturali e seminaturali, basata su dati LandsatTM riferiti al 1998. In occasione della produzione del CLC2000 si è deciso di aggiornare quel dato sulla base dell''infrastruttura fornita dal progetto CLC2000. La minima unità cartografata è pari a 20 ettari.
