The CORINE programme (COoRdination de l’Information sur l’Environnement), which was launched by the Council of the European Communities in 1985, is intended to dynamically monitor the state of the environment in the Community area, with a view to guiding common policies, monitoring their effects and proposing possible corrective measures. Within the CORINE programme, the CORINE-Land Cover project is specifically intended for the detection and monitoring, at a scale compatible with Community needs, of the characteristics of the territory, with particular attention to the protection requirements. The information is comparable and homogeneous for all the countries participating in the project. The data were derived through the photointerpretation of satellite images. The 44 land cover classes are divided into 3 three levels (5 classes for the first level, 15 for the second level and 44 for the third level).
