The dataset represents the mapping of the soil areas consumed in Piedmont as of 2019. The elaboration was carried out by Arpa Piemonte as part of the activities related to the national project of monitoring of the consumption of soil 2020 conducted by the National System for Environmental Protection (SNPA) through the coordination of ISPRA and the involvement of several regional agencies. Last update of the July 2021 cartography. The remote sensing monitoring process updates and integrates annually the entire historical series based on the availability of new high resolution satellite and aerial images and models for the detection and classification of potential transformations. This allows from year to year a more accurate analysis of the territory, also integrating and modifying previously undetectable and classifiable phenomena (omissions and commissions) allowing to obtain new and more accurate estimates of the land consumed. In this sense, thanks to the recent availability on Piedmont of recent high resolution aerial orthoimages (e.g. AGEA 2018) it was possible to re-analyse and supplement the estimates of the annual increases in land consumption carried out in previous years and in particular those of 2017-2019, based previously only on the availability of Sentinel 2 satellite images in medium resolution. The project aims to monitor the transformations of the territory due to urban, infrastructural, commercial expansions, etc. with the consequent loss of natural, agricultural and semi-natural soil, understood as an essential and fundamentally non-renewable environmental resource.
