The Standardised Hospitalisation Rate (TOS), by the direct method, is a weighted average of the specific hospitalisation rates by gender and age at which weightings are obtained from a type population chosen as a reference (standard). The type population used is the Italian population as of 01/01/2012. The standardised hospitalisation rate is used to eliminate the effect of the different composition by gender and age of the populations on which it is calculated, thus making it possible to compare rates for different populations.
