Fractures of the neck of the femur are particularly frequent traumatic events in the elderly; they are divided into medial or intracapsular (subcapitated and mediocervical with risk of aseptic necrosis of the head) and lateral or extracapsular (basicervical, pertrocanteric and sub-troncanteric). In most cases they are caused by chronic bone diseases (e.g. senile osteoporosis) and occur due to low-energy trauma (adventitious falls in the home environment), mainly in women who with the condition of severe osteoporosis very often associate internal pathologies and motor coordination. International Guidelines agree that the best treatment of femur neck fractures is surgical; surgical strategy depends on the type of fracture and age of the patient; the interventions indicated are the reduction of fracture and prosthetic replacement. Several studies have shown that long waits for surgery correspond to an increased risk of mortality and disability of the patient, as a result, the general recommendations are that the patient with fracture of the neck of the femur is operated within 24 hours of entering the hospital.
