The sheet falls in the central portion of the northern continental margin of Sicily and extends from Capo Mongerbino and Cefalù.
The sector investigated is characterised by a very varied continental platform-scarped system that sees, from west to east, the reduction of the extension of the entire system and the presence of canyons, fault escarpments, engravings, landslides and structures from fluid emissions. These structures show the close connection between morphogenetic processes, tectonics and seismicity. The analysis of the data allowed to recognise, in fact, the presence of pockmarks and mounds, interpreted as mud vulcanetti, aligned along parallel directions both to tectonic features, and to the clusters of the epicenters of earthquakes recorded in the area. These elements make the entire margin unstable as potentially capable of triggering underwater landslides. The canalised structures, which constitute a preferential transport route for the large amount of sediment deposited on the margins of the continental shelf by rivers that flow into this sector of the Sicilian margin, can lead to the triggering of phenomena of mobilisation of the bottom. There are 3 critical points (canyon, tectonic feature).
