Sheet 32 is characterised by the Scarpata of Malta, which connects with medium gradients in the order of 25° the continental shelf to the Ionian abyssal plain. It is an active tectonic system consisting of trans-tensive faults set on a Mesozoic structure to the transition between the oceanic crust of the Ionian Sea and the continental one of Sicily. The coastal strip is exposed to the risk of earthquakes and tsunamis of medium and high intensity, linked to the presence in surrounding areas of active geological structures. The tsunami risk, in particular, appears to be increased by strong topographic gradients capable of triggering phenomena of gravitative instability at the edge of the platform. Overall, the most significant aspect of the risk from natural phenomena in the area under consideration is the combination of a high geological “hazard” and the presence of a considerable exposed heritage consisting, inter alia, of highly vulnerable industrial settlements, such as the petrochemical pole in the Gulf of Augusta. There are 1 critical point related to escarpment faults. CNR-ISMAR.
