Sheet 33 extends on the eastern side of Sicily, from S. Teresa di Riva (Messina) to Catania, covering about 80 km of coast and covering an area of about 1 190 km².
The bottoms in sheet 33 can be divided into three main sectors. The first sector, to the north, is characterised by wide and deep canyons/channels, which erode a substrate probably belonging to the continuation in a submerged environment of the Peloritani Mountains, resulting in the formation of elongated ridges along the slope. These ducted systems connect to greater depth with the underlying Canyon of Messina, not visible in the sheet. The second sector corresponds to the area in front of the Etna volcano and represents the ethnic domain in the strict sense. It is bounded in the North and South by two WNW-ESE oriented morphological elements: the canal of Fiumefreddo and the Canyon of Catania, and is characterised by the presence of a large buldge extended from coast to the batial plain, located at a depth of about 2 000 m. The entire sector is affected by fault systems with diverging trend from SW-NE to SE-NW and N-S. The third sector is located south of Acitrezza and is characterised by the presence of canyons/channels arranged about E-W, extended by the edge of the continental platform up to 1 800 m deep. The largest for size and indentation in the platform is the Canyon of Catania, which reaches a length of about 12 km.
There are 9 critical points that include canyon warheads, faults, lava fronts and wrecks.
