The area of Foglio 34 Messina is bordered by the coasts of north-eastern Sicily and southwestern Calabria. The seabeds belong mainly to the Ionian sector of the Strait of Messina.
The area of the F34 is dominated by the morphology of the Messina Canyon and its tributaries, as well as by numerous forms produced by gravitative transport (cracks and unchanneled gravitative flows). The continental shelf is almost everywhere absent and, where present, has an extremely small extension (less than 1 km). In the southern portion of the area the seabed reaches the largest bathymetries and connects to the Rise of Messina, which in turn ends in the Ionian abyssal plain.
The main morphobatimetric elements detected in the area are: niches and landslides; the thalweg and escarpments that border the Messina Canyon and its tributaries; areas with unducted gravitative flow deposits; the escarpments of generic erosion; background forms (e.g. sand waves).
There are 8 critical points that include canyon and canal warheads, landslides and wrecks.
