Foglio 38 frames almost entirely the Gulf of Squillace, marked recess of the Ionian coast of Calabria that corresponds to a sort of flat isthmus that connects the Sila and the Coastal Chain to the reliefs of the Serra and Aspromonte.
The sheet is dominated by the morphologies of the complex system of the Squillace Canyon. The canyon is spread over the entire continental escarpment until it engraves the shelf break reaching a minimum distance of 1 km from the coast (at 20 m deep). In the distal part, the canyon reaches the bacinale plain of the current Crotone basin at a depth of 1 100 m. The canyon headboard is organised into four smaller branches that flow into the thalweg of the main canyon. Each of the minor branches is fed by multiple warheads with more or less retrograde activities, some of which show obvious embryonic forms (Canyon of Serre). The heads are generally rounded (so-called “cauliflower”) with dendritic incisions and erosive channels and with a significant number of detachment niches, even intra-channel.
There are 5 critical points that include canyon and canal warheads.
