The area included in Sheet 40 includes the northern part of the unit known in geological literature as the Crotone Basin, and the southeastern part of the Rossano Basin, which develop along the ionic margin of the Calabro Arch.
The continental margin Ionic Calabro included in Sheet 40 is characterised by a generally very small continental shelf in extension, and by an extremely steep escarpment (which can reach even 20° of slope), very extensive and very articulated. There is no real abyssal plain, but the lower part of the escarpment is bordered to the south by a series of basin areas (Bacino di Crotone and Spartivento) and to the north by the Valley of Taranto which, with a straight N-S trend, separates the bottom of the continental escarpment from the two hornet and apulous slopes. The Calabrian continental escarpment is engraved by numerous canyons and erosive canals that drain the impressive sedimentary input from the Calabrian hinterland towards the Taranto Canyon. The canyon heads are imposing, dendritic morphology with usually straight V talweg, composed of numerous tributaries that typically affect the shelf break often reaching distances of a few hundred meters from the coast line. The slopes of the canyons are strongly eroded and characterised by widespread niches of detachment with a sharp edge.
There are 2 critical points that include canyon warheads.
