The area of Foglio 45 is located in the center of the Gulf of Taranto, in the northern Ionian Sea overlooking the Apulian, Lucanian and Calabrian coasts. There are no land left in the sheet.
The Foglio covers the deepest part of the Gulf of Taranto and extends for about 35 km in latitude and about 55 km in longitude. The depth of the seabed varies from -266 m to about 1 900 m. The morphobatimetry of the bottom reflects the geodynamic dispute complex of the Gulf of Taranto, and three different physiographic contexts can be recognised: 1) the Valley of Taranto, an elongated NO-SE depression that separates the Calabrian margin to the west from the Apulian margin to the east, and which represents the submerged continuation of the bradanic pit; 2) the Calabrian margin to the west of the Taranto Valley, characterised by a relatively flat area at depths of 700-900 m, interspersed with structural highs with NO-SE directions, reaching depths of about 250-450 m and representing the underwater continuation of the Apennine crops; 3) Finally, to the east of the Taranto Valley you can see the base of the relatively steep slope (2.5°) of the apulian margin.
