Dataset description

the sheet is located in the South Tyrrhenian Sea, covering entirely the Gulf of Policastro and the stretch of the coast located between the Station of Caprioli in Pisciotta (SA) and Scalea (CS), in the regions Campania, Basilicata and Calabria. The sheet covers the continental margin at the area of the Gulf of Policastro and the areas immediately adjacent to it. The geological structure of the Tyrrhenian margin of the Cilento offshore and the Gulf of Policastro is formed by the high structural structure of Cilento and the Sapri basin, which represents a negative morphostructural element. The physiography present in the area is characterised by a narrow continental shelf (about 2-5 km of amplitude) and by a very steep upper escarpment (> 10°) and by the presence of some seamounts that delimit the trapped plain located between 700 and 900 m deep, defined as the Sapri basin. The continental shelf from Capo Palinuro to Capo Scalea has very small sedimentary accumulations and is lapped by the heads of numerous channels, which trigger extensive erosion and material transfer to the basin areas. There are 7 critical points, four related to canyon warheads or erosive canals, and three to wrecks or submerged anthropogenic structures. The scientific body responsible for the sheet is the CNR-IAMC.
