Vatican up to the Valley of Scilla, including the northeastern sector of the Bacino di Gioia and the Palmi Basin. The continental shelf, considerably reduced or in some cases completely absent, has an average inclination of 1° up to the eye, which is located at an average depth of 130 m. The upper continental escarpment has an average slope of about 3° and is interrupted around 1 000 m of depth by a wide depression known as the Peri-Tirrenian Basin of Gioia, which extends for about 50 km parallel to the coastal margin.
