Foglio 36 is located along the central-southern sector of the Calabrese Ionic margin, between the town of Bovalino and that of Caulonia.
Sheet 36 is dominated by substantial uplift phenomena that in the Plio-Quaternary have been characterised by a lifting rate 0.8-0.9 mm/year. The continuous lithospheric lifting accompanied by the hydrological regime of the region, consisting of torrential watercourses (a river characterised by abundant solid transport that occurs especially during the rainy seasons and following extreme weather events), facilitates the formation of hyperpicnal flows that then flow on a relatively narrow platform, easily reach the limit of this and determine a continuous passage of material from the reliefs directly to the escarpment, without feeding the platform. These phenomena have essentially led to the formation of important canyons (which currently present some showy retrogressive erosion phenomena) and gravitative movements en masse on the upper part of the escarpment, also induced by seismicity. All this leads to a reduced development of the continental shelf that in some sectors seems to be almost absent, especially at the head of the main canyons.
There are 6 critical points that include background instability, canyon warheads, active faults
