Sheet 48 includes an area characterised by both widespread and channeled erosion phenomena, by deposition phenomena due to currents and in particular, in some periods of the year, to the phenomenon of cascading currents that determine the appearance and morphology of the external platform and the escarpment both upper and lower. The internal platform has numerous substratum outcropping areas close to which, at the height of Otranto, extends a large field of dunes. The outer platform is dotted, in the central part, by sub-circular sediment volcanoes, of height ranging from 2 to 6 m and a maximum diameter of 200 m, in variable stratigraphic contexts consisting of valley fillings; they are also present along the entire eyelash of sediment waves with N-S trend.
The continental escarpment is characterised by widespread landslide deposits, locally remobilised by more recent landslides, by recent fault escarpments (probably active) with discards exceeding 40 m, organised in two low-angle systems oriented E-O and ONO-ESE; from an active and well-developed canyon (called Tricase’s toponym on the nearest coast), which has markedly erosive hips probably conditioned by tectonics in their alignment.
There are 1 critical points related to fault escarpments and canyon head. CNR-ISMAR.
