Sheet 52 is characterised by the presence of the Bari Canyon, an erosive-depositional system with three main ducts almost parallel to each other that originate on the edge of the platform. Within the canyon there are large landslide deposits of about 150 km² that appear coeval with the mass deposits generated along other stretches of the southern Adriatic margin during the low stationing phase of the MIS sea level. Currently, the dense and cold currents that form on the Adriatic platform in the winter season are channeled into the canyon with a low sediment load but with a high erosive power. The continuous erosion of the canyon head linked to the intensity of the background currents and the presence of still active tectonic structures can generate landslides events and trigger a phenomenon of retrogressive erosion of the head towards the inner platform. In the portion of the inner platform adjacent to the canyon are fields of wave deformation, an erosive outcrop system, fields of fluid ejection and “mud castles”, and a sector of internal platform moderately affected by deformation with the thickness of the holocenic wedge of very high parking sediments.
