Natura 2000 Network is a network of areas for the conservation of biodiversity on the territory of the European Union, relating to the conservation of natural and semi-natural habitats and of wild fauna and flora. Natura 2000 sites are identified by natural, landscape and cultural characteristics defined by specific legislative acts.
The Habitats Directive 92/43/EEC provides for the creation of the European Natura 2000 ecological network consisting of “Special Conservation Areas” (SAC) and “Special Protection Areas” (SPA) and is in continuity with Directive 2009/147/EC “Birds”, specifically on the conservation of wild birds. The transposition of the Habitats Directive took place in Italy through DPR 357/1997, as amended and supplemented by DPR 120/2003.
The Region has established its own network of 102 sites of which: 95 SACs, 5 SPAs, 1 SPA/ZPS “Palude di Colfiorito” and 1 SCI/ZPS “Monti Sibillini” covering 15.9 % of the regional territory for a total area of about 140,000 hectares, with partial overlapping areas of some areas.
