The cartography contains the perimeters of the Sites of Community Interest (SICs) — Special Conservation Zones (SACs) present on the regional territory updated in December 2017. The Site of Community Importance (SIC) and the Special Conservation Area (SAC) are concepts defined by Community Directive No. 43 of 21 May 1992, (92/43/EEC), also known as the Habitats Directive, and transposed in Italy in 1997. The designation of the SACs takes place in accordance with Article 4 of the Habitats Directive and Article 3(2) of Presidential Decree 357/97 as amended and Article 2 of the Ministerial Decree of 17 October 2007. In particular, with DM 7 April 2017 56 Special Conservation Areas of the Mediterranean biogeographical region are designated in the territory of the Sardinia Region.
