The Sardo Toponomastic Atlas is a project aimed at cataloguing and deepening scientific toponyms in use throughout the regional territory, in collaboration with the Universities of Cagliari and Sassari through an interdisciplinary group and in collaboration with the Department for Regional Affairs of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers. The Sardinian Toponomastic Atlas has had the characteristic of being preparatory activity for an orderly revision of the regional toponymy, consistent with the annotations of the Department for Regional Affairs/Presidency of the Council of Ministers, and then used as a scientific-technical basis for the realisation of direct interventions in the field of toponymastics such as bilingual road signs present in the outgoing and incoming countries of Sardinia.
The choice of the name of the town has been indicated by each municipality with a specific decision in accordance with Law No. 482 of 15-12-1999 on the protection of historical linguistic minorities, which recognises:
— In Article 2, among the others worthy of protection, the Sardinian and Catalan language and culture of Alghero;
— In Article 10, the power of the council bodies of the municipalities to decide, in addition to the official names, the adoption of place names in accordance with local traditions and customs.
