The analysis of the available volatile sulphides and of the labile iron present in the sediment makes it possible to infer indirectly any phenomena of anoxia-hypoxia that are past or ongoing in water bodies monitorates (Ministerial Decree 260/2010). Depending on the concentration of labile iron and the ratio of volatile sulfide concentration to that of labile iron, it is possible to attribute a certain risk class (episode hypoxia, frequent hypoxia — episodic anoxy and frequent to persistent anoxy).
