It summarises in a numerical value a combination of some variables (dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll “a”, total phosphorus and dissolved inorganic nitrogen) that define, in a scale of values from 1 to 10, the conditions of trophy and the level of productivity of the coastal areas. With the issue of Ministerial Decree 260/2010, this index is identified as an element of physico-chemical quality in support of the Biological Quality Elements (EQB), therefore contributes to the classification of the ecological status of marine-coastal waters and is assessed on the basis of whether or not certain threshold values are exceeded. The data refer to the value of the index calculated by station, transept and water body of the Veneto coast.
