The requirements of habitat protection in Latvia are defined by Species and Habitat Protection Law of March 16, 2000, which is based on Directive 92/43/EEC on protection of natural habitats and wildlife, and on Directive 2009/147/EC on protection of wild birds. The lists of specially protected habitats (http://likumi.lv/doc.php?id=13405) are made according to the aforementioned law. The lists include both traditionally protected habitats in Latvia and those protected by Species and Habitat Directive. The Specially protected habitat list includes 93 habitats.
