Special Areas of Conservation, established by the Habitats Directive in 1992, aim at the conservation of ecological sites where:
— natural or semi-natural habitats of Community interest, because of their rarity, or their primary ecological role (listed by Annex I to the Habitats Directive);
— species of fauna and flora of Community interest, also for their rarity, their symbolic value and their essential role in the ecosystem (listed in Annex II to the Habitats Directive).
