The table provides insight into the average number of years insured and the average accrual rate for the General Old Age Act (AOW) of persons in and outside the Netherlands during the accrual phase for the AOW pension at the end of the reporting year. The total insured period of a person is determined by the period that he or she was insured during the previous 50 years of the AOW age.
Until 2013, the AOW age was 65 years old. After this, it is linked to life expectancy. Until 2024, for each year that we live longer, the AOW age increases by 1 year. After 2024, the AOW age increases less rapidly: 8 months instead of 1 year. A transitional arrangement applies to persons born in the period 1946-1954. Persons from 1946 and 1947 retain their rights; for the birth cohort 1948-1954, retirement and starting age shift by one month to two years.
