The data in the table ‘Adoptions by country of birth’ refer to so-called ‘ordinary adoptions’. With an ordinary adoption, a new legal family relationship is established between the child and the adoptive parent(s). The family relationship with the original parent(s) ceases to exist. A completely different category concerns the so-called partner ad options (formerly referred to as step-parent adoptions). These partner ad options are not included in the table.
Not all ordinary adoptions run through the Dutch courts. If a country has ratified the Hague Adoption Convention, an adoption pronounced in that country will be recognised without the intervention of a Dutch court. The table includes both adoptions through the courts and adoptions through the Hague Adoption Convention.
