This table contains figures on the price evolution of a package of goods and services purchased by consumers in the Netherlands. These figures are compiled according to European directives and this is called the European Harmonised Consumer Price Index (HICP) for the Netherlands. The composition of the package of goods and services makes it possible to compare prices between EU countries.
The table also shows the harmonised consumer price index for the euro area. This index shows average price developments in the euro area countries. Furthermore, the European Consumer Price Index is also listed in the table. This is the harmonised consumer price index for Member States of the European Union.
In addition, the table shows the annual change in the HICP. The annual change in total spending is an important indicator of inflation.
Data available from: January 1996.
Status of the figures:
At Eurostat’s request, the HICP publications for the Netherlands no longer have a standard distinction between the first provisional results and later final results. Results of the HICP are characterised as preliminary only if it is already known at the time of publication that data are still incomplete, a revision is expected in a later month, or in special circumstances such as the corona crisis.
In most cases, all the price information requested is known to CBS when the first results are published and no adjustment will take place later. However, sometimes certain price information is not available on time and the outcome can be adjusted later. HICP outcomes can then always be revised at the same time as the CPI outcomes, even if they were not published as provisional in the previous month. CPI results are marked as provisional at first publication, the month on which the figures are final.
