Biomass; consumption and energy production from biomass by technique

This table provides data on biomass consumption, energy production from biomass and the number of sites. Biomass energy is the most important form of renewable energy. Biomass can be consumed in two ways. First, biomass can be consumed for conversions into other energy carriers. An important example is the conversion of biomass into electricity. Second, biomass can be consumed finally. This means that no useful energy carrier remains after biomass consumption. An example is the burning of wood in stoves. The data is broken down by technique. Examples are: — the majority of biomass in power plants — incineration of waste in waste incineration plants — heating of wood stoves by households — the consumption of biogas — the consumption of biotransport fuels Data available from 1990. Status of the figures: This table provides final figures up to 2020 and provisional figures for 2021. Changes as of June 2022: Preliminary figures for 2021 have been added. When will there be new figures: Preliminary figures for the previous year appear each year in June. Final figures for the previous year appear each year in December.
