The bosom is that part of the surface water that does not have a fixed level. It is usually not part of a polder, but needs to store polder water before it is drained. In general, the water is discharged from the bosom onto a canal that takes the water to the sea. When water discharge is not possible in a natural way, a bosom pumping out the water; in other cases, the bosom water is discharged via a spuisluis.
The fact that the water does not have a fixed level does not mean that a certain level is not sought. This level is called the goal or bosom. If the water is temporarily stored, for example, to be discharged later, one speaks of mountain bosom.
