Breeding Islands (Structure Vision Eemsmond-Delfzijl)

This stock contains two breeding islands, as established in the Structure Vision Eemsmond-Delfzijl. 1) In Delfzijl, a new salt marsh landscape is created at the height of the Schermdijk. A breeding island of approximately 2 hectares is built in this salt marsh, especially for fish thieves and northern terns. The establishment of the island takes into account possible threats to the breeding birds. This breeding island is included in the Marconi project. 2) A bird breeding island is also built near Nieuwstad. The island serves as a breeding ground for terns and fish thieves. In addition, this location serves as a high-water refuge outside the breeding season. The island is at least two hectares in size. The crown height for the breeding function should be above the average highest high water line and be sufficiently low to be flooded by waves in winter. This prevents sustainable vegetation storage and accumulation of bird manure. This breeding island is included in the project Dijk Improvement Eemshaven — Delfzijl.
