Candidates for elections Amsterdam City Council

Until 2022, there was little known gender of candidates in municipal elections. The figures were limited to percentages and numbers of registered offices and aldermen’s posts. Historical figures from more than 50 years ago were not available digitally. This dataset was compiled by (old) employee Harry Stork by hand. The lists were compiled using old electoral lists from the municipal Elections Office supplemented with source material from the Amsterdam City Archives, old newspapers and other historical sources. The name of a large proportion of candidates for the Amsterdam City Council has become obsolete and in many cases also their gender. For the latter, the designation (m) or (v) on the ballot paper, additions as ‘m’ or ‘mother’ and, where necessary, additional research. If the sex is plausible, but could not be established with one hundred percent certainty, the column ‘certainly’ is left empty. There are candidates who don't fit into the category of male or female. With them, the column ‘Slaughter’ reads: ‘Others’. For some candidates, the gender is unknown. With them, the column ‘Slaughter’ reads: “Unknown.”
