Carbon sequestration in the soil in arable border management

What do you see? This map shows the potential carbon capture in the soil when implementing the arable border management measure. Under this measure, part of the field (3 %) is no longer used for crop production. No fertilisation takes place on these field edges and is not ploughed. The carbon content of the soil can therefore increase in the edges. The map shows that this measure has limited potential compared to the other measures. What’s the value? This card, together with the maps for the other measures, provides insight into where in the Netherlands a certain measure would be effective for carbon capture in agricultural soils. Who is this important to? This map is important for policy makers and researchers involved in climate mitigation (carbon sequestration), but also for the agricultural sector where soil organic matter is an important indicator of soil quality.
