Cart tracks are the visible remains of old routes. They come from the Middle Ages, but they probably go back much further. Wide systems or bundles were created, including through the intensive use of the routes by carts with different track widths. Due to the constant search for the most ideal road conditions, the system became increasingly wider. Recent research commissioned by the province has shown that many more cart rail systems have been preserved in Drenthe than previously thought. The bundles of the different routes are easy to follow. They are representatives of, among other things, the long, interregional north-south route over the Hondsrug but also of local connections between the Drenthe esdorpen. In this map image are the cart tracks that have been recognised in an AHN2 analysis of Drenthe. In addition, cart traces have also been discovered through aerial photographs, which can be found under the heading ‘carren’s tracks — aerial photos’
