A provincial monument is a monument placed by the province on the provincial monument list. It is a movable or immovable property that is of interest to the province because of its cultural historical value. The province of North Holland has a list of monuments on which provincial monuments are listed in 4 main groups: dyke and barrier elements; The Theory of Amsterdam; water management works and other objects. Each monument has a unique CHW code as an identification number. The “Provincial Monuments Ordinance 2005” lays down the rules on the listing of monuments on the provincial monument list, the designation of protected structures (formerly: city and village views) and the granting of a monument permit by the province of North Holland. The Regulation provides that it shall be prohibited without or by way of derogation from a licence from Deputed States: a) to break down, move or modify a protected monument in any way; b. to repair, use or have used a protected monument in a manner that demarcates or endangers it. This means that a permit is also necessary for an extension or in the case of a building in the immediate vicinity, thereby affecting the perception value of the monument.
