The Civil Courts table gives an overview of the nature and extent of
civil or civil lawsuits in the Netherlands.
Civil law governs the rights between natural persons and/or
legal entities such as companies.
Civil cases are dealt with by the courts, courts and tribunals and
the Supreme Court of the Netherlands.
Since 1 January 2002, the Courts have been hearing the
civil matters take place in the ‘canton sector’ or ‘civilian sector’.
The old terms “candidates” and “arrondissement courts” are on
that date expires.
Although the results published here begin with the reporting year 2001,
the new designation will also be used for that year.
A civil case begins with a subpoena or with a petition.
Subpoena proceedings are lawsuits which, according to the law, commence
with a call to appear before the court (submitting).
These lawsuits end with a verdict. Petition procedures are
lawsuits that, according to the law, begin with a petition (request)
to the judge to make a certain decision.
These lawsuits end with an order.
