Dataset description

This table contains figures on the price evolution of a package of goods and services purchased by consumers in the Netherlands. These figures are compiled according to European directives and this is called the European Harmonised Consumer Price Index (HICP) for the Netherlands. The composition of the package of goods and services makes it possible to compare the price movements of consumer goods and services between EU countries. The table also shows the HICP constant loads: this is the HICP in which the impact of changes in the rates of taxes on products (e.g. VAT and excise duties on alcohol and tobacco) has been removed. In addition, the table shows the monthly change and the annual change in the HICP. The annual change in total spending is an important indicator of inflation. These figures can be viewed over 359 spending categories. Furthermore, there are 34 aggregations of product groups (special aggregates) in the table. Of each product group, it can also be found how much the consumer in the Netherlands spends on it in proportion to his total expenditure. This is called the weighting coefficient. The total weighting is 100,000. Data available from: January 1996. Status of the figures: At the first publication for a reporting month, HICP outcomes are always marked as provisional. This publication concerns a flash estimate based on still incomplete data. Under normal circumstances, HICP outcomes become final at the second publication in the same month. Differences between the preliminary and final results are explained by the data that became available after the flash estimate. After the estimation, the results of the HICP are characterised as provisional only if it is already known at the time of publication that dates are still incomplete, a revision is expected in a later month, or in special circumstances such as the coronavirus crisis. In most cases, no adjustments will be made later. Changes compared to the previous version: Data about a new period has been added and/or adjusted. When are new figures coming? On the last working day of the month to which the figures refer, or the first working day of the following month, the flash estimate of the HICP shall be published. This flash estimate is usually final on the first Thursday of the month.
