Dataset information
Dataset description
This table contains figures on the costs of measures to prevent or combat environmental pollution caused by the economic sectors within the Netherlands. Statistics are a European regulation and are required by law for all countries of the European Union. Statistics are compiled in a similar way by the countries of the European Union, so that the results can be compared between countries.
The main variables in the table are the total Dutch annual expenditure on environmental protection broken down by government, businesses and households. The government occupies the local and central government. The companies are made up of all companies active in the mining, industrial, energy and water supply sectors, plus those active in environmental services. The transport and agriculture sectors are not part of this European statistics.
Examples of environmental protection measures include: waste water treatment for households and businesses, soil remediation, industrial air filtering, household waste collection and treatment, noise insulating measures, industrial waste repeal. Costs and investments in renewable energy and energy savings are not covered by the Environmental Protection Expenditure. The statistics cover the total environmental services provided by the sectors, including the consumption of environmental products (depreciation) but not the production of environmental products themselves.
Environmental costs are further subdivided by environmental domains: air, water, waste, soil, noise, nature and landscape, radiation, environmental research and other environmental, according to the European CEPA 1 to 9 classification.
The table is compiled according to the international system of national accounts, as set out in the System of Environmental-Economic Accounting, Central Framework and is published annually. The table contains, in addition to the variables investment and environmental expenditure, the variables environmental production, final spending, Intermediate consumption, paid transfers from the government, market production of the government, taxes and subsidies, import, export and foreign transfers received.
