In Roman times (2000 to 1500 years ago), the Old Rhine formed the border (Limes) of the Roman Empire. On the south bank of the Oude Rijn, the Romans laid a road with forts. Archaeologists call this border the ‘Limeszone’. In many places, remains of this have been found during excavations. Another important linear object is the Channel of Corbulo, a waterway dug by the Romans that connected the Old Rhine with the Helinium, the mouth of the Meuse.
