File with village names and type of village. The settlement landscape of Fryslân dates essentially from the twelfth to the fifteenth century. On the threshold of the New Age (1500), most of the existing settlements were already present as independent fairgrounds or church villages with its own bordered village area. A few more came later. The settlement typology used here is based on both morphological, genetic and functional aspects. The settlements are divided into nine categories: Cities; Vlecken; Terp villages; Road Villages; Esdorphins; Vaartdorpen; Peat colonies; Heath villages; Other villages (including cross villages and dike villages).
