Since 2015, all ministries have started an annual government-wide data inventory. A data inventory is a way to map all available data in an organisation and to investigate which data is suitable for publishing as open data. For each department it is indicated which datasets are available for re-use, which are still public and which datasets remain closed due to (e.g.) personal data. The data inventory is completely public and produces many new available datasets every year. Since 2017, the data inventory has been carried out among all data owners who publish data on data.overheid.nl. The data inventory is not mandatory among data owners, which is why not all owners have participated in the data inventory. Data.overheid.nl has guided the data inventory from 2015 to 2018.
